The Black Door Shop
The Black Door Shop provides the community with a pleasant hub area where the following areas are available
Kitchen area where food preparation skills can be shared by professional cook volunteers with backgrounds in many cultural areas. Sitting area where life skills can be shared and we can learn from one another. Volunteers already signed up are willing to share skills in book binding, knitting, sewing by hand and machine, knitting, computer use, household electrical safety, managing finance and social activities including jigsaw assembly, playing domino’s or a meeting area,
A workshop exists where laptops can be refurbished and volunteers can share skills in relation to how this is accomplished. Refurbished laptops are made available by request of care workers in the community. This helps asylum seekers and refugees contact relatives cast home or other parts of the UK or allows studies to be made.
Wood items can be worked in the workshop as well and small groups can take part in planned activities to help skills develop. Electrical items can be tested and a certificate issued in relation to Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) by two licensed volunteers. All areas require a risk assessment to be undertaken by those taking part and once the volunteer in charge is satisfied the necessary competences can be met for all safety aspects the activities can begin.
The ethos at The Black Door Shop is to provide a warm welcoming space for all ages that is safe and comfortable.
The Black Door Shop takes in donations of household items , clothes bikes, books etc. from the community and shares annually to partner charities over 50 tons of items each year that benefits asylum seekers and refugees and prevents this amount ending in landfill.
The Black Door Shop also has three teams of mixed ages out collecting litter early on Saturday mornings and in a year over 300 bags of litter are collected and uplifted by the Cleansing Department from outside our premises. Those involved include local youth organisations together with adults in the community who join our volunteers
Books received as donations are distributed to Thornliebank Health Centre to East Ren Care Workers who make them available to clients . Books are similarly shared with the Ukraine Centre in Busby
There is a growing demand for books by all ages which we are happy to share on request.
All of our activities require volunteers and our happy team is always seeking additional help. Even an hour a week would help us. If you can spare any time to help in any way you will be most welcome.
